1)  Solution: A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances which are chemically non-reacting, whose composition can be varied within certain limits, is called a solution.

Solute: A substance which gets dissolved in a solvent is called a solute.

Solvent: A substance in which a solute gets dissolved is called a solvent.

 Examples

Type

Example

1. Liquid + Liquid

Water and alcohol

2. Solid + Liquid

Salt solution, sugar solution, iodine in alcohol (tincture iodine)

3. Liquid + Gas

Soda water, aerated drinks

4. Solid + Solid

Alloy

2)Suspension:
A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture in which the small particles of a solid are spread throughout a liquid without dissolving it. The chalk powder in water, muddy water, wheat flour in water etc. sand in water are all examples of a suspension.

3) Colloids:

Colloids are a type of solution in which the size of the solute particles is intermediate between that in solutions and suspensions.

When observed through a high power microscope, the particles in a colloid appear to be floating over the surface of the liquid.

This shows that colloids are heterogeneous in nature though they appear to be homogeneous.

The milk, ink, blood etc. are examples of colloids.

4) Components of ink can be separated by centrifugation process.
