A four sided figure is called a Quadrilateral.
A quadrilateral can be constructed uniquely, if we know any one of the following:
i. Four sides and one diagonal
ii. Four sides and one angle
iii. Two diagonals and three sides
iv. Two adjacent sides and three angles
v. Three sides and two included angles

It depends on which of the above types you are constructing.

Example 1: (To construct using a compass)
Construct a quadrilateral ABCD in which AB = 4.3cm, BC = 4cm, CD = 6. 4cm, DA = 2.8cm and BD = 6.5cm. Measure AC. Also, write the steps of construction.

Steps of Construction:

(a) Draw a line segment AB=4.3cm.

(b) With centre A and radius 2.8cm, draw an arc. With centre B and radius 6.5cm, draw another arc which cuts the previous arc at D.

(c) Join AD and BD.

(d) With B as centre and radius 4cm, draw an arc. With D as centre and radius 6.4cm, draw another arc which cuts the previous arc at point C.

(e) Join BC and DC.

ABCD is a required quadrilateral with AC = 5.9 cm.

Example 2: (To construct using either a protractor or just a compass)
Construct a trapezium LMNO, in which LM =7cm, MN=4.5cm, NO=4cm,angle M = 60° and LM||NO. Write the steps of construction.

Here, we are given the measure of 3 sides and 1 included angle. We need the measure of   also to construct the required trapezium.

It is known that LM||ON, so  =180°

 =180°

 =180° - 60°=120°

Steps of construction:

a) Draw LM = 7 cm.

b) At M, draw an angle XML = 60°.

c) Cut an arc of radius 4.5cm from point M to intersect MX at point N.

d) At N draw an angle YNM = 120°.

e) Draw an arc of radius 4 cm from N to intersect NY at point O.

f) Join OL.

LMNO is the required trapezium.
