Projectile is an object projected with some velocity and its initial direction of motion makes an angle α ( α >0 and α <90°) with horizontal direction. 
Projetile moves in a two dimensional plane so that at given time it has vertical displacement as well as horizontal displacement from the point of projection.
 
Let the projetion velocity be u and let it make an angle α with horizontal x-direction
 
velocity component :- ux = u cos α   and uy = u sin α
 
displacement component :- x = u cos (α) × t   and    y = u sin(α)× t - (1/2) × g × t2;
 
by eliminating t ( substitue t = x / [u cos(α) ] in y-displacement ), 
 
we get for vertical displacement,  begin mathsize 12px style y space equals space open parentheses tan space alpha close parentheses space x space minus space open parentheses fraction numerator g over denominator 2 u squared cos squared alpha end fraction close parentheses x squared end style
above equation is similar to y = bx - cx2 , which is equation of parabola
