What is pH?

Answer:

pH is used to measure the strength of an acid or a base.

Mathematically it is negative logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration in the solution.

pH = - log ([H+])

The value of pH can tell whether a solution is an acid or a base or a neutral solution.

Acids have a pH value less than 7.

Bases have a pH value greater than 7.

Neutral solutions have pH = 7.

In general if the pH is decreasing means the solution is becoming more acidic. If the pH of a solution is increasing, it means the solution is becoming more basic.
