Hi Nila Shri,

The pH scale is used to indicate whether a substance is acidic or alkaline. It operates by measuring the potential of the hydrogen ions contained in a substance. The formula for calculating the pH of an aqueous solution is defined by UC Davis as "the negative of the logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen ions." This can be expressed as:

pH = - log[H3O+]

The pH scale ranges from the number 0 to the number 14. An aqueous solution with a pH below 7 is defined as an acid, while a solution with a pH above 7 is a base. The number 7 itself is neutral.
