Metabolism is the sum total of all chemical and energy changes taking place in a living organism.

Metabolism consists of two groups of processes:

(a) Anabolism: It is the sum total of life processes that result in the building up of the living substance or protoplasm.

(b) Catabolism: It is the sum total of life processes that result in the breakdown of protoplasm.
