Tension is a force that applies in opposite directions on opposite sides of an object. Tension is the (magnitude of) the pulling force exerted by a string, cable, chain, or similar solid object on another object. 
A pendulum puts the wire that connects it under tension. A climbing rope gets put under tension when you climb it. Tension can be thought of as a separating force.
