what is hyperconjugation?

- Hyperconjugation can be defined as the stabilising interaction that results from the interaction of the electrons in a σ-bond (usually C-H or C-C) with an adjacent empty or partially filled p-orbital or a π-orbital to give an extended molecular orbital that increases the stability of the system.
- It is a permanent effect.
- It involves the delocalisation of σ− electrons to C − H bond of an alkyl group directly attached to an unsaturated system or to an atom with an unshared p-orbital.
- The order of stability of cations depend upon the hyperconjugation as greater the number of alkyl groups attached to a positively charged carbon atom, greater is the hyperconjugation and stabilization of the cation.
