When an object is thrown vertically, the minimum speed required for the object to reach infinity
(i.e. escape from earth's gravitational field) is known as escape speed, sometimes loosely called as escape velocity.
Escape speed is 
, where g is acceleration due to gravity and RE is radius of earth.
