Density of an object is defined as the mass per unit volume of that object.
It is given as
begin mathsize 12px style Density space equals space fraction numerator Mass space over denominator Volume end fraction end style
where V is the volume of an object, and M is its mass.
It is a physical property of matter and measures the compactness of matter, of how much mass occupies a given space.
An object sinks or floats on water depending on its lightness or heaviness as compared to water.
Density of an object < water; object floats
Density of an object > water; object sinks
An object which has greater mass is called a heavy object, and an object which has less mass is called a light object.
