Covalency

  • The number of electrons shared by one atom of an element to achieve the nearest inert gas electron configuration is known as its covalency.

Formation of Covalent Bond

  • When both atoms in a reaction need to gain electrons to complete their octet, sharing of electron takes place.
  • Let us study how the chlorine molecule is formed to understand the formation of covalent bond.

Formation of chlorine molecule

  • A chlorine atom has 7 electrons in the outermost shell.
  • When two chlorine atoms combine, they share one electron each to form a shared pair of electrons, thus completing both their octets. Hence, the chlorine molecule exists as Cl2.
