Expert Answer
When an object moving with speed v in a circular path of raidus R , this object experiences acceleration that is
directed towards centre of the circular path. The object may be moving with uniform speed in circular path ,
but it is keep on changing its direction . This change of direction gives acceleration in the direction towards
centre of circular path. This acceleration is called centripetal acceleration.
Magnitude of centripetal acceleration is ( v2 / R ) , where v is speed of object in circular path and R is its radius.
According to Newton's second law, the force f providing this acceleration is f =m ( v2 / R ) ,
where m is the mass of the body. This force directed forwards the centre is called the centripetal force.
For a stone rotated in a circle by a string, the centripetal force is provided by the tension in the string.
The centripetal force for motion of a planet around the sun is the gravitational force on the planet due to the sun.
For a car taking a circular turn on a horizontal road, the centripetal force is the force of friction.
