What is an International Date Line? Why has it been adopted?

  1. The longitude at 180° is the same to the east and west of the Prime Meridian. Since this longitude is diametrically opposite to that of the Greenwich Meridian, it results in a difference of 24 hours on crossing the line.
  2. In order to avoid the confusion of having different dates (difference of 24 hours resulting in the changing of the date) in the same country, according to the international agreement, the International Date Line has been approved.

For this purpose, the International Date Line bends and runs zigzag at the Bering Strait between Siberia and Alaska, Fiji, Tonga and in some other islands.
