CBSE Class 12-science Answered

what happens to the magnetic dipole moment of a bar magnet if we cut the bar magnet diagonally?

answered-by-expert Expert Answer
The magnetic dipole moment depends on the pole strength and the area of cross-section.
Now, if we cut the magnet diagonally, then one pole will have the same strength but the other pole will have very a largely reduced strength.
So, the dipole moment of one-half of the magnet will reduce.

However, the sum of the dipole moments of the two pieces will still be the same as the dipole moment before cutting.
