  • Decomposers help in decomposing the dead bodies of plants and animals. In this way, they act as cleansing agents of the environment.
  • They also help in returning the various nutrient elements which were initially taken by the plants from soil, air, and water. These elements can then be reused by the crop plants.
  • This helps to maintain the fertility of the soil and the soil continues to support crops again.
  • If however, there were no decomposers, then the dead bodies of plants and animals would keep on accumulating and the elements in their bodies would never be returned to their original pools like soil, air, and water.
  • In the absence of decomposers, soil, air, and water would not be replenished, and all the nutrients present would soon get exhausted. Hence, the cyclic process of life and death would be disrupted and life would come to an end.
