answered-by-expert Expert Answer
1) In a semiconductor, free moving electrons jump from valence band to conduction band with an increase in temperature.

2) When these electrons jump, they leave behind a virtual positive space which is called a "HOLE".

3) So, the jumping of electron is simultaneously associated with creation of hole. This is the electron hole pair in semiconductors. Since, it is a simultaneous process and both electrons and holes exist, they are called a pair.
