Expert Answer
Syncretism involves a seamless amalgamation of beliefs, rituals and other practices from a variety of disciplines, religious or otherwise. Syncretism concentrates on the essential unity of human belief systems, rather than their differences. The Vietnamese followed a wide variety of syncretic religious systems that drew from Buddhism and certain local beliefs. These popular religions were spread in the Vietnamese heartland by people who claimed to have had a vision of God. While some of these religious systems supported French colonial rule, others espoused and inspired the cause of Vietnamese nationalism.
