The Indian Constitution has granted the Right to Justice and Equality to all the citizens of the country. In fact, the issue of equality is central to any democracy. After independence the Constitution declared all people of the country as equal. It was felt that the principal of equality would unite the people within the country. Everyone should have equal rights and opportunities. Untouchability was abolished and was made a crime punishable by law. The principal of equality and freedom to the people to follow any religion was a key element of establishing secularism.
It is important for people to be equal because it is only after establishing equality that a country can become a true democracy and protect basic fundamental rights of citizens.
