Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae that causes severe disfiguring skin sores and nerve damage in the arms and legs. Leprosy is thought to be transmitted via droplets from the nose and mouth during close prolonged contact with affected individuals.

Treatment depends on the type. Antibiotics are used to treat the infection. Anti-inflammatory drugs are used to control nerve pain and damage related to leprosy. This may include steroids, such as prednisone. Patient may also be given thalidomide that suppresses the body's immune system. It helps in treating leprosy skin nodules.
