The frequency of wave formed on a vibrating string is called a mode of vibration of string. There are various modes of vibration possible for a string or a hollow pipe.

The lowest frequency of vibration is called fundamental frequency or first harmonic. The higher modes of vibrations are called overtones. The second harmonic is called first overtone, and so on.

In an organ pipe, the modes of vibrations are of frequencies in ratio 1 : 2 : 3..... This means that all the harmonics are present as overtones in air column in the pipe.

In an organ pipe closed at one end, the frequencies are in ratio 1 : 3 : 5.... This means that, only the odd harmonics are present as overtones. That is, frequencies which are odd multiples of fundamental frequency are present in the pipe.
