Waste is any substance which is discarded after primary use, or it is worthless, defective and of no further use. E.g. Spoilt food, vegetable peels, leaves, wood, grass, paper, leather, cotton, cattle dung, etc.

Causes of accumulation of more and more wastes:

Improvements in life style have been responsible for generating a large amount of wastes.

Over population, urbanisation, industrialisation have all been responsible for generating a large amount of waste.

The demand for electricity, firewood, nuclear energy has increased multifold.

All this is leading to more and more generation and accumulation of wastes.
