The overlapping of two or more waves travelling simultaneously in a medium without loosing their individual nature or shape is known as superposition of waves.
And the principle of superpostion of waves enables us to determine the net waveform when these waves overlap each other.

The three main effects due to the superposition of waves are:

1. Interfernce of waves:
If two waves of same frequency or wavelength moves with same speed in the same direction, then such superposition of waves gives rise to interfernce of waves.

2. Beats:
Two waves of slightly different frequency moving with same speed in the same direction superimpose, they give rise to beats.

3.Stationary waves:
Superposition of two waves of same frequency and amplitude moving with same speed along the same path but in the opposite direction give rise to stationary waves.
