- In India, the subnormal and abnormal activities of the Monsoon affecting the seasonal pattern of rainfall are known as the vagaries of monsoon.
- It is caused by the early arrival or late withdrawal of rainfall which ruin the crops leading to slowdown of the economy.
- The Monsoon in India is erratic and irregular.
- While it may rain heavily in one monsoon year, there may be scarce rainfall in the next year.
- So while the copious rainfall in some years may cause floods and destroy the crops, large deficits in rainfall cause droughts and crop failure during some other years.
- While it rains heavily in one part of the country such as Assam leading to floods, the other part of the country at the same time may experience droughts.
