The Organisation of Subordinate Courts varies from state to state but the essential features remain the same. Each state is divided into districts for judicial administration, and every district has many civil and criminal courts.

  1. Civil Courts - Civil Courts hear cases related to land, property and money transactions, etc. Civil Courts also have jurisdiction over matters like arbitration, guardianship, marriages, divorce and cases involving a Will.
  2. Criminal Courts - The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 provides separate sets of magistrates for the discharge of executive and judicial functions. The executive magistrates such as the District Magistrate or Additional District Magistrate are under the control of the state government, whereas the Judicial Magistrates are under the High Court’s authority.
