Expert Answer
1. The change in the physical propertiesof a substance from one state to another is called its change of state.
Find the terms related to interconversion of states of matter: -
Fusion or Melting: The process by which a substance’s solid state changeinto the liquid state at a constant temperature by absorption of heat is knownas fusion or melting and the fixed temperature at which the melting occurs is known as the melting point.
Example:Ice (solid) melts into water (liquid) at a temperature of 0ºC.
Vapourisation or Boiling:- The process by which a substance’s liquid state changes into the vapour or gaseous state at a constant temperature by absorption of heat is known as vapourisation or boiling and the fixed temperature is known as the boiling point or vapourisation point of the liquid.
Example:Water (liquid) vapourises to steam (gas) at a temperature of 100ºC.
Condensation: - The process by which gas changes into the liquid state at a constant temperature by releasing heat is knownas the condensation or liquefaction and the fixed temperature is known as the condensation temperature.
Example: Steam (gas) condenses to water (liquid) at a temperature of 100ºC
Freezing: - The process by which a substance’s liquid state changes into its solid state at a constant temperature by releasing heat is called as freezing and the fixed temperature is known as the freezingpoint.
Example:Water (liquid) freezes into ice (solid) at a temperature of 0ºC.
Sublimation:- The process in which a solid directly converts into its gaseous state at all temperatures is called as sublimation.
Example: Camphor and naphthalene
Deposition: The reverse ofsublimation is called deposition in which gaseous substance condense directly into the solid state, bypassing the liquid state. The formation of frost is an example of deposition.
Evaporation:The process by which liquid changes into gaseous state below its boiling point. It can happen even at room temperature.
Example: - Water
Solidification:- The process in which a gas condenses directly into its solid state is called as solidification.
Example:Carbon dioxide gas gets converted into dry ice.
