What are the stages of Gene Therapy ?

Answer:

Gene therapy refers to the transplantation of normal genes into cells in place of missing or defective ones in order to correct genetic disorders. Thus diseases caused by malfunction of a gene can be cured by gene therapy.

The basic steps of gene therapy include:
  • The faulty gene that causes a specific condition must be identified.
  • The location of the affected cells in the bodys tissues or organs must be pinpointed.
  • A working version of the gene must be available. This is done through the introduction of normal, functional copies of the gene via vectors to replace defective cells in the patient
  • The working version of the gene has to be delivered to the cell. This is carried out by the reintroduction of the modified cells into the patient once the genes have been fixed in their vectors.
