What are the advantages of the hormonal coordination over the nervous coordination?

Organisms with a central nervous system (CNS) are well adapted to cope with changes in the external environment and within the body. The nervous system has three distinct functions:

  • Collection of information about changes in its environment, both internal and external.
  • Processing this information and often relating it to previous experiences.
  • Acting on this information by coordinating the response of the organism.

One remarkable feature is the speed of the response which is virtually instantaneous.

In addition to the nervous system, the endocrine system helps in coordinating the activities of our body. The hormones produced by endocrine glands act as messengers between the nervous system and the organs of our body.
