Pathogens are bacteria and viruses that can cause diseases. Most wastes that are disposed into water like sewage, human and animal excreta contain pathogens.

These pathogens generally enter the human body from contaminated drinking water and cause many water borne diseases like cholera, typhoid, jaundice, hepatitis etc.
