An oxide is a chemical compound that contains at least one oxygen atom and one other element in its molecular formula.
The formula of oxide is O2- .
Metals
Reaction:
Magnesium combines with oxygen to form white-colored magnesium oxide with the liberation of some amount of heat.
2Mg + O2 → MgO + heat
Magnesium oxide
Non-metals
carbon has burnt in oxygen gas to produce carbon dioxide gas along with some heat.
C + O2 → CO2 + heat
Carbon dioxide
Hydrocarbons
- Take a candle and fix it on a wooden table. Light the candle and let it burn for a while.
- Invert a glass on the burning candle.
- The candle burns for a few seconds and then goes off. The candle needed oxygen present in the air.
- This shows that when the oxygen in the air within the glass was used up, the flame was extinguished.
CxHy + O2 → CO2 + H2
