A compound word is a combination of two or more words that function as a single unit. Compound words are usually combinations of nouns and adjectives. 
 
Examples:
Closed form
butterfly, secondhand, keyboard
butter+fly, second+hand, key+board
 
hyphenated form
six-year-old, over-the-counter, daughter-in-law
six+year+old, over+the+counter, daughter+in+law
 
open form
post office, middle class, full moon
(no hyphenation)
