What actually a prism

In Optics, Prism is a block made up of optically transparent material and has triangular cross section.
Three lateral surfaces of prism are perfectly flat and refraction of light takes place when light ray is passed through these flat surfaces.
 
Prism is used to get spectrum of white light, i.e. white light is split into separate colors from violet to red after refraction.
