The sentence 'We have had a good discussion.' is in the present perfect tense.
The word 'Have' or 'to have' and 'Has' are perfect verbs. Their use in a sentence changes its tense to present perfect tense.
A sentence in the present perfect tense describes either
a. An action which began in the past and has continued to the present. or
b. An action which ended before it was spoken of but the exact time when it ended is not known.
For Example:
I have filled the application.
She has washed the sheets.
'Had' is the third variant of the perfect verb. It changes the tense of the sentence to past perfect tense.
A sentence in the past perfect tense describes an action which began and completed before a specific time in the past.
For Example:
I had found a letter at my doorstep last evening.
