CBSE Class 11-science Answered

Two wires, one of steel and the other of aluminium, each 2m long and of diameter 2.0 mm are joined end to end to form a composite wire of length 4.0 m. What tension in the  wire will produce a total extension of 0.90mm?  Y for steel = 2 x 1011 Nm-2; Y for aluminum = 7 x 1011Nm-2.

Y for steel, Y1 = 2 x 1011 Nm-2

Y for aluminium, Y2 = 7 x 1011 Nm-2

Length of each wire, L = 2 m, Diameter, d = 2.0 mm, radius, r = 1 mm = 10-3m

Therefore, area of cross-section, A =
