Expert Answer
Let the time taken by the tap of smaller diameter be x hours.
So, time taken by the tap of larger diameter be (x - 8) hours
Work done by the tap of smaller diameter in one hour is 1/x
So, time taken by the tap of larger diameter in one hour is 1(x - 8)
The work done by the 2 taps together in 1 hour 1/x + 1/(x - 8)
According to the question,
1/x + 1/(x - 8) = 5/48
Solving this we get
5x2 - 136x + 384 = 0
x = 24 as x = 16/5 rejected
The time taken by the tap of smaller diameter be 24 hours.
