Two men X and Y started working for a certain company at similar jobs on January 1, 1950. X asked for an initial salary of Rs. 300 with an annual increment of Rs. 30. Y asked for an initial salary of Rs. 200 with a rise of Rs. 15 every six months. Assume that the arrangements remained unaltered till December 31, 1959. Salary is paid on the last day of the month. What is the total amount paid to them as salary during the period?

Initial annual salary of X = Rs.300 × 12 = Rs.3600
Annual increment of X = Rs 30 × 12 = Rs.360
Total salary of X for 10 years will be obtained using arithmetic progression, with initial value Rs. 3600 and
difference Rs.360 for 10 years as given below
Total salary of X = (10/2) [ 2×3600 + 9×360 ] = Rs. 52200
Initial half-reary salary of Y =Rs.200×6 = Rs. 1200
Half-yearly increment of Y = Rs.15×6 = Rs.90
Total salary of Y for 10 years or 20 half-yearly period will be obtained using arithmetic progression,
with initial value Rs. 1200 and difference Rs.90 for 20 half-year period as given below
Total salary of Y = (20/2)[ 2×1200 + 19×90 ] = Rs. 41100
Total salary paid to X and Y = Rs. 52200 + Rs. 41100 = Rs. 93300
