ICSE Class 9 Answered

Two cylinder both containing carbon dioxide are connected together by a tube fitted with tap. The capacity of one cylinder is 4dm^3 and that of other 1dm^3 the pressure in one cylinder is 560mm Hg and that is second cylinder is 1000mm Hg which is the final pressure in both cylinders On opening the tap of temperature is constant?

Given:

V1 = 4 dm3

V2 = 1 dm3

p1 = 560 mmHg

P2 = 1000 mmHg

After opening tap,

Total volume V3 = 4+1 = 5 dm3

For cylinder one,

P1 V1 = P3 V3

560×4 = P3 × 5

P3 =448 mmHg

For Cylinder two,

P2 V2 = P3 V3

1000×1 =P3 × 5

P3 = 200 mmHg

Final pressure = 448 + 200

                     = 648 mmHg

 The final pressure in both cylinders on opening the tap will be 648 mmHg.
