Let two masses m1 and m2 are connected by a light rod and this rod is revolving around an axis passing
through middle of the rod as shown in figure. Let r1 and r2 are the respective distance from the mid point O.

Moment of inertia of this configuration  = m1×r12 + m2×r22
In the given question, m1 = 1 kg ,  m2 = 2 kg, r1 = r2 = 1 m
 
Moment of inertia = 1×12 + 2×12 = 3 kg-m2
