Expert Answer
To describe the magnetic field of earth at a point on its surface, we must know the following three quantities:
(i) Declination: Declination at a place is defined as the angle between the magnetic meridian and geographic meridian.
(ii) Dip or inclination: Dip at a place is defined as the angle between directipon of total intensity of earth's magnetic field and a horizontal line in the magnetic meridian at that place.
(iii) Horizontal component of earth's magnetic field: It is the component of the total intensity of earth's magnetic field along a horizontal line in the magnetic meridian.
