- Tilak did not believe in agitation through constitutional methods. He believed that independence could be gained only by adopting constitutional means. Protests were necessary to drive the British out of the country. He fearlessly fought for 'Poorna Swaraj' or complete independence from the British rule.
- He popularised new slogans among the people and supported ‘mass agitation’ and ‘self-reliance’.
- Tilak propagated the concept of 'Swadeshi'. He asked the people to agitate against the British policies and use Swadeshi goods. This according to him would hit the British trade and industries.
