There were some people at a party. 2/5 of them are men. After 1/5 of the men left, there were 35 more women than men at the party. How many people were there at first?

Men's fraction of participants = 2/5, women's fraction of participants = 1 - (2/5) = 3/5
 
If (1/5)th of men left, hence fraction of men who left = (2/5)×(1/5) = 2/25
 
Remaining fraction of men = begin mathsize 12px style 2 over 5 space minus space 2 over 25 space equals space fraction numerator 10 minus 2 over denominator 25 end fraction space equals space 8 over 25 end style
 fraction of excess women begin mathsize 12px style 3 over 5 minus 8 over 25 equals space fraction numerator 15 minus 8 over denominator 25 end fraction space equals space 7 over 25 end style
if (7/25) parts of fraction is 35, total memeber of people attended the party = begin mathsize 12px style fraction numerator 35 over denominator begin display style bevelled 7 over 25 end style end fraction space equals space 35 over 7 cross times 25 space equals space 5 cross times 25 space equals space 125 end style
