The vapour density of a volatile chloride of a metal is 74.6.If the specific heat of the metal is 0.55,calculate the exact atomic weight of the metal and the formula of its chloride.

Expert Answer
Given:
Vapour density = 74.6
Specific heat = 0.55 cal/g
According to Dulong-Petit's law,
Therefore the metal must be boron.
Molecular mass = 2× Vapour density
= 2 ×74.6
= 149.2
So,
149.2 - 11.63 = 137.4
137.4 is the weight of chlorine only.
The formula of metal chloride is BCl3
