CBSE Class 10 Answered

The taxi charges in a city consist of a fixed charge together with the charge for the distance covered. For a distance of 10 km, the charge paid is 105 and for a journey of 15 km, the charge paid is 155. How much does a person have to pay for traveling a distance of 25 km?

Let us consider the taxi chanrges as y and it is given by,   y = mx + c  .....................(1)

where c is the fixed charge, m is fare per distance of 1 km  and x is the distance travelled.

If fare is Rs.105 for 10 km :    10m + c = 105 ......................( 2 )
If fare is Rs.155 for 15 km :    15m + c = 155 ......................( 3 )

by subtracting eqn.(2)  from eqn.(3) , we get 5m = 50   or  m = Rs.10
by substituting m value in eqn.(2),  we get,   10(10) + c = 105  or c = Rs.5

fare for 25 km is obtained by substituting respective values of variables in eqn.(1) :     25(10) + 5 = Rs.255
