ICSE Class 9 Answered
The surface area of the upper area of the submarine is 200 m2. If the submarine is 70m below the sea water, calculate the total force acting on its upper surface. [ Density of sea water= 1040 kg m-3 , density of mercury = 13,600 kg m-3 , atmospheric pressure= 75 cm of mercuy and g= 10ms-2].

Expert Answer
Surface area (A) of upper surface= 200 m2
Pressure due to air= x x g = 0.75m x 13600 kg m-3 x 10 ms-2 = 1,02,000 Pa.
Pressure due to sea water only= x x g = 70m x 1040 kg m-3 x 10 ms-2
= 7,28,000 Pa.
Therefore, total pressure (P) acting on the surface of submarine= ( 7,28,000 + 1,02,000) = 8,30,000Pa.
Total force acting on the submarine= P x A = 83000 x 200
= 166,000,000 N.
