The sugar mills are shifting towards the southern and western states of India because of the following reasons:

1. In states such as Maharashtra, sugarcane has a high content of sucrose.

2. The comparatively cooler climate favours the crushing of sugarcane.

3. In this belt, the cooperatives have been more successful.
