By the early nineteenth century, the oak forests in England were fast vanishing. Britain being a naval power required timber on a large scale for building ships. The British sent many search parties to India to look into the possibilities of securing timber from the country. As India had dense forest cover, trees were fell recklessly to export timber to Britain to build ships.
