CBSE Class 9 Answered

The radius of a sphere, the side of a cube and the length of a rod made of the same material of copper is 3cm. These are successively immersed in a liquid to find the density of a liquid. The area of cross section of the rod is 6π sq.cm Which of the three will displace minimum volume of water?

Volume of displaced liquid equals volume of immersed solid

Volume VS of sphere of radius r ,  VS = (4/3)πr3 = (4/3)π × 33 = 113 cm3

Volume VC of Cube of side a = a3 = 33 = 27 cm3

Volume Vr of Rod = Crosssection area × length = 6π × 3 = 56.55 cm3

Volume of cube is smallest volume , hence cube of side length 3 cm displaces minimum water
