The potential difference across a cell is 2 V when a current of 1 A is drawn from it. The potential difference falls to 1.8 V when a current of 1.2 A is drawn. Find the emf and internal resistance of the cell.

Using the relation:
V = E - I r
2 = E - 1 r ...............(1)
1.8 = E - 1.2 r ...............(2)
Subtracting (2) from (1) we get,
0.2 = 0.2 r
r = 1 Ω
From (1),
2 = E - (1 × 1) = E - 1
E = (2+1) V = 3 V
