Let the thief originally steal x diamond.

According to the condition,

No of dimonds(1st wathchman) = begin mathsize 16px style straight x over 2 end style
No of dimonds(2nd wathchman) = begin mathsize 16px style fraction numerator begin display style straight x over 2 end style over denominator 2 end fraction equals straight x over 4 end style
No of dimonds(3rd wathchman) = begin mathsize 16px style fraction numerator begin display style straight x over 4 end style over denominator 2 end fraction equals straight x over 8 end style
He escaped with one diamond.
begin mathsize 16px style straight x over 8 equals space 1
rightwards double arrow straight x space equals space 8 end style

Therefore the thief originally steal 8 diamond.
