The momentum of a body of mass 5kg is 10 kg m/s. A force of 2 N acts on the body in the direction of motion for 5 sec, the increase in kinetic energy is:

Expert Answer
Mass = m = 5 kg
Momentum = mv = 10 kg
velocity v = momentum / mass = 10/5 = 2 m/s
Applied force F = 2 N
acceleration a = force / mass = 2 / 5 = 0.4 ms-2
Change in speed after 5 seconds = v = vo + a t = 2 + ( 0.4 × 5 ) = 4 m/s
where vo is initial velocity
Change in kinetic energy = (1/2) m [ vf2 - vi2 ] = 0.5 × 5 × [ 42 - 2 2 ] = 30 J
where vf is final velocity and vi is initial velocity
