Let x subscript 1 comma x subscript 2 comma... comma x subscript 8 be 8 observations.

Given that mean of x subscript 1 comma x subscript 2 comma... comma x subscript 8 is 40.

So, we have, fraction numerator x subscript 1 plus x subscript 2 plus... plus x subscript 8 over denominator 8 end fraction equals 40
So, when 5 is added to each observation, the new mean is

equals fraction numerator x subscript 1 plus 5 plus x subscript 2 plus 5 plus x subscript 3 plus 5 plus... plus x subscript 8 plus 5 over denominator 8 end fraction equals fraction numerator x subscript 1 plus x subscript 2 plus x subscript 3 plus... plus x subscript 8 over denominator 8 end fraction plus 40 over 8 equals 40 plus 5 equals 45
So when a number is added to each observation, the value of new mean is equal to old mean added to the number.

Thus the new mean is 45.
